Dr. Abbey L. Woods is board certified in Family Medicine and has been practicing in the Oklahoma City area since completion of her residency. She is married with one daughter. Her husband was born and raised in South Oklahoma City, and his large family has deep ties to this community.
“I was drawn to family medicine because I love all aspects of caring for people- including the relationship formed when truly understanding their circumstances. I believe the patient-physician relationship begins with getting to know the entire picture. I believe people want to go back to the days when the town doctor knew everyone, their families, and made house calls. While medicine has definitely changed, I believe the relationship that people desire with their doctor is possible when both are committed to making it happen. I like to have longer initial visits to get the whole picture of the person. I know everyone’s time is valuable and not every visit requires length, but having the upfront investment allows for quick stop-in visits for acute issues like colds and viruses.
I also love the variety that comes with family medicine. Not only is each person different, but his or her needs are very different. My day can include everything from confirming an early pregnancy to cutting out an ingrown toenail. It keeps me on my toes, but also keeps life interesting.
Managing chronic diseases is also a passion of mine. I get great joy from watching someone understand the disease process so they can face it head-on and take control of their lives. I want people to come to me for advice and allow me to share my knowledge. It is my job to make sure they have all the information they need to make the best decision for their situation. I believe family medicine and primary care physicians in general are the key to improving the health of all, especially Oklahomans. It starts with a patient-physician relationship built on trust and understanding that both are working for the patient’s best interest.”
